Meet Mia
At just 18 years old, Mia is already building a career in a field where women are still very much the minority. Born and raised in Waco, Texas, she graduated high school at 15 and went on to attend Texas State Technical College at 16. This year, she graduated with honors and began working as a service technician right here in Waco.
When I photographed Mia, I knew I didn’t just want pretty pictures. I wanted to capture something that represents who she is right now, at the very beginning of a career she worked hard for and can someday look back on with pride.
Finding Her Path
Mia’s interest in mechanics actually started with a class she took in high school. She went into it without any previous automotive experience, but quickly realized it was something she genuinely enjoyed.
After finishing the class, she began thinking seriously about turning that interest into a career. She prayed about the decision and ultimately chose to apply to TSTC, where she began learning the skills that would eventually lead her into the automotive field.
The journey wasn’t always easy. Mia says school taught her not only how to work on vehicles, but also how much she was capable of pushing herself when something was difficult.
“I learned that to achieve things you really want, you have to push yourself.”
Making Her Place in the Shop
Starting out in a field traditionally dominated by men has come with both encouragement and challenges. Mia says there have been coworkers willing to cheer her on and help when she needs it, but there have also been moments when she’s felt underestimated.
Her approach is simple: keep going.
“I remind myself that I’m not there to impress them. I’m there to do what I love and to get the job done.”
Today, Mia is the only woman working in her shop, and that’s something she’s especially proud of. She made it through school, earned her place in the field, and continues building her confidence and skills every day.
Her Advice to Other Young Women
For other young women who might be interested in a career that feels intimidating or unconventional, Mia’s advice is simple: go for it.
“You’ll never know how far you can go until you try.”
She knows there may be people who doubt you along the way, but she doesn’t think that should be the reason you stop. For Mia, it’s about proving to yourself that you’re capable and not allowing someone else’s expectations to determine what you pursue.
“Show them that a woman can do it just as a man could.”
More Than Just Photos
For Mia, this session was about capturing a chapter of her life she wants to remember. She wanted photos that showed both sides of her personality! The hardworking mechanic who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and the fun, confident young woman behind the uniform.
Years from now, I hope these photographs remind her of where it all started: 18 years old, building a career she loves, and proving that she belongs exactly where she chooses to be.
It was such a privilege getting to capture this season of her story right here in Waco. ☀️
